Fez Medina

Two men greet each other in the Fez Medina

Friends

Fez Medina, 2009:

Our guide meets an old friend and greets him with the traditional kiss on both cheeks. I have the idea that this custom was learned from the French who colonized Morocco for 53 years. Most Moroccans are fluent in French as well as Arabic and if they are Berbers, then they are fluent in Berber as well.

The man on the left wears a Fez, the round, cylindrical hat that used to be associated with the Turks. It is not commonly worn now. It does lend a nice touch, though, doesn’t it? Well, actually, it makes this shot. Not only is it red, an eye attracting color, but it tells you that you are in an exotic place.

I had tried many times to get one of these kiss scenes or just a handshake between two men dressed in djellabas but had never been successful. This is the benefit of constant effort. Sooner or later you will land your shot.
