Fathers and Sons

Fathers and sons in Yunnan China

Proud Papas

Yunnan, China 2005

This was a rainy day. A mud slurry covered the slippery streets. The Chinese didn’t notice and went about their shopping or simply hunkered on a street corner to watch the goings-on. We teetered our way down the sidewalks trying not to fall.

These fathers seem to be waiting for their wives to get their hair done but most likely the wives are doing errands. You can see how these men love their sons. The man on the left is bursting with joy as he watches his son examine his new toy.

The Chinese got some good news this week. The “one child” rule has been changed to the “two child” rule. The Chinese population is growing old and they need young people to work, to pay taxes and to care for the aged. And they have found out that when you abort or kill the girl babies, you wind up with too many men who have no one to marry. Young men with no prospect for a wife is a problem for society. The planners forgot to think about that.
