Cappadocia, Turkey mid 1990’s
These unusual formations are called ‘fairy houses’ by the Turks. They were carved by the wind and rain. Ancient peoples soon figured out that they too could carve the soft stone called tufa. They carved homes inside the rock and lived there since before Christianity.
When I visited here, nearly 25 years ago, no one lived in the fairy houses. I’ve read that now hotels have bought some and you can spend a night in one if you like. Sounds interesting!
I’m glad I have this man and his donkey in my shot. He adds a sense of dimension. Otherwise, you would have no idea of how tall the fairy houses are.
