Expression is Everything

Young boy with glasses looks into camera

Portrait of a Syrian Boy

I was told that there are two elements for a good portrait. The near eye must be sharp and the expression on the person’s face must connect to the viewer.

Men wearing keffiya

Look Who's Here!

I think these two photos qualify. What do you think?

Just to tell you the story behind these photos. The little boy was sitting in front of his father’s little grocery store. His father came out when he saw me with the camera and was pleased to let me photograph his son. The little boy has a beautiful face and his glasses give him an air of seriousness.

I came across the two older men when I had gone out at dusk hoping to find a few more photos as our vacation in Syria was coming to a close. I saw these men sitting on a bench in a shopping area, just watching the people go by. They were pleased to be photographed, though I didn’t ask their permission. The man on the right was very pleased and gave me a big wink(!). What does that mean in Arabic?
