Erg Chebbi

Facing Algeria

Morocco’s deserts aren’t the Sahara, but they’re the next best thing and a lot more accessible. These sand mountains are within walking distance of the oasis village of Merzouga in southeastern Morocco. They rise out of the flat, hard, rock strewn desert and change their color as the sun rises and sets in the sky. Early mornings they are gold, late evening they are pink and change to reddish as the sun sets. The local Berbers are not immune to their beauty and one told me that November was the best month for “the colors”.

If you plan to visit this area, you can’t do better than to go with my friend, Ali Mouni.
