Environmental Portrait

a man in the market at Tashkent making and selling brooms

Brooms For Sale

Tashkent, Uzbekistan 20012

This man has skill. His brooms are a work of art to someone like me. To the Uzbeks, they are a tool and they need the best to sweep their homes and streets. He seems to have a broom for every need. That big bunch of dried plants resembling tumbleweed is used for incense by the gypsies. He’s not going to miss a sale if he can help it.

His mother worked alongside him, or maybe he worked alongside her. When she saw me take his photo, she wanted a photo of the two of them standing next to each other. He is rather Asian looking but she was Caucasian in appearance.  That is what I noticed most about Uzbekistan. The many faces: I couldn’t categorize the Uzbeks by the way they looked.

This was shot with a wide-angle lens. For an environmental portrait you can’t do better. But you need a market where the people aren’t averse to having their photo taken. Otherwise, take your long lens and try to be inconspicuous. I am partial to low light photos like this one. To me low light equals drama.
