Environmental Portrait: Dumpling Baker

Dumpling Baker

Fergana Valley, Uzbekistan 2012

I talked about “filters” in yesterday’s blog and showed how adding a filter to an  uninteresting photo could give it a patina of mystery. Today’s photo has an interesting subject: a man retrieving baked dumplings from his street side tandoori oven. While you may not be interested in baking, the man’s posture makes you wonder what he is doing. The dumplings set out to cool give you your answer.

There is no need for me to add a patina with a filter, because the damaged surface of the stucco covering his tandoori has its own patina. We can imagine that this man bakes dumplings the way bakers in Central Asia have baked them for centuries.

I could crop the photo and use the bottom half as a filter for other photos. It already has a muted color and a wonderful texture. Look for something similar in your own photos to start your texture file.
