Drayton Hall is unrestored and is the the best example of Colonial architecture in America. In its heyday, it was a rice plantation and required African slaves to work and harvest the crop. Africans from Senegal and other rice growing areas of West Africa were prized and brought high prices in the slave markets of America and the West Indies.
The house is much as it was back when it was inhabited by the Drayton family, with the floors, woodwork and colors of those days intact.
This view is the front view although the rear view with its staircase and veranda seems like the front to visitors. This view faces the river and it was by traveling on the river that visitors arrived at the plantation.
