Saints Marie by the Sea, Camargue Region, France 2018
A mother and daughter enjoy the celebration of Saint Sara, the patron of the Roma or gypsies. They wear the costume of the area of Provence. Not only do they have a distinctive cap on their heads, their hairstyle is also distinctive. Sort of a double layer of rolled hair. Isn’t it good that they have not forgotten how to do it? This is “Sunday Best” clothing. For everyday, they’d wear a lace cap sort of like a small bonnet.
I was so happy to see these women strolling around the village and at the festivities. If only I could have come to Europe when I was young. I’d have seen clothing like this being worn as everyday clothing…by the old women… at least.
