Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 2013
I’d slept long enough after the flight from California. It was picture taking time! Camera in hand I walked slowly down the busy street in front of my hotel, peering in doorways and scrutinizing passers-by. In a matter of minutes, I spotted this lovely young woman sitting in a tiny room. She sat in the open doorway with her coffee ready to serve. Fresh green rushes scattered on the floor signaled hospitality as did her smile.
I entered and took a seat on a stool. The space was so tiny that I had to turn my knees to keep them from bumping her table. I nodded when she gestured to her coffee cups. She poured a strong brew from a black pottery jug where it had been brewed atop a charcoal brazier. The taste was similar to a good espresso, maybe not as bitter. I don’t remember if sugar was offered.
I sipped my coffee and took pictures. She was happy to pose for me, always with her head tilted to one side. I couldn’t tell her not to, and it’s a good thing because she is perfect with her head tilted.
During my time in Ethiopia, I bought coffee from several ‘coffee women’. Sometimes the ‘coffee house’ was set up under a shade tree. Sometimes under a palm frond canopy. Sometimes the woman watched her children while she earned her money. It is delightful to have a child shyly bring your drink and then sit close beside you as you enjoy the company of strangers.
beautiful colors and composition. love the rosy background and her sweet smile.
