Chinese Veggies

Cabbage and Squash still life Yunnan market

Rembrandt Light on Cabbage and Squash

2007 Yunnan Province

The farmer’s market was our destination on a rainy day in Yunnan. I call it the farmer’s market, but for the Chinese homemaker or cook, it is the only market. They would shop nowhere else. They demand fresh. The fish are still swimming, the ducks quacking and the chickens clucking. Dew is on the scallions, cabbage and squash. The mushrooms have a dusting of powdery earth. No plastic cover or styrofoam trays. No wonder Chinese food is so delicious.

I shot the photo of cabbages and squash because the flat shape of the cabbage caught my eye. The Chinese vendor is an artist. The vegetables were arranged as if Bon Appetite magazine were coming for a photo shoot.

Banana blossoms in vegetable market in China

Banana Blossoms

I’d never seen banana blossoms offered as food. You can eat them, but they require a lot of preparation. Think artichokes. I’m not sure the results are as delicious as an artichoke. They are prettier than an artichoke, however.
