Catfish Row

sign for catfish row

A grab shot of the Catfish Row sign

We were hurrying to see the Heyward-Washington house when I noticed this sign and got a ‘grab shot”.  Catfish Row is the name given to what was known as Cabbage Row in historic times. It was an area where freed slaves lived and Catfish Row was made famous in Gershwin’s Opera, Porgy and Bess. And for me, being raised in South Carolina, the name conjures up childhood days.

Catfish Row sign edited in Photoshop

Catfish Row, once more with feeling!

I like this photo better. I cropped to highlight the lamp and the sign. They are the only parts of the photo that are worth looking at.  I saturated the colors and added a layer of orange texture.  Then,  or maybe it was before,  I used Topaz Simplify to make it more like a drawing.

You can learn a lot of tricks about Topaz filters and also Nik by looking up their websites and clicking on ‘learn’ or some word that means learn. I learn something new everytime I watch one of these and if I don’t remember, well, I can watch it again and again. They are free.

Before Photoshop and all the wonderful plug-ins available, I’d have deleted this photo. Now, I like it.  I often use photos like this one as thank you cards or just for short letters to someone I like. I just print them and paste them on thick paper. You can buy special note paper to print on, but that takes some trial and error and my way is quicker.
