Carnival in Peru

Quechua men, dressed in colorful hats and ponchos, stand outside the local cantina in Pisac Peru at Carnival time

Men of the Andes

Pisac, Peru 2003

Quechua Indians in traditional costume stand in front of the local cantina. Although many in Pisac watched photographers like hawks and demanded payment for each shutter click, these reserved men posed shyly for me. They were from a village high in the mountains and had come to enjoy the Carnival celebration.

Don’t you love these hats? They wear the little knitted “babies cap”…my name for it…under these upturned sombreros. The sombrero worn by the women had a cloth fringe that dangled over their eyes: a protection from the blinding sun.
