Cappadocia: Bird’s Eye View

Cappadocia, Turkey  sometime in the early 1990’s

Cappadocia is an otherworldly landscape. Pinnacles of tufa, resembling giant mushrooms or fairy houses as the Turks call them, dot the area. Larger, castle-like structures once provided homes for families who carved rooms out of the soft substance. Ancient churches, with still brilliant frescoes, remain from the days when Christians settled here.

I shot this landscape from the top of a tufa tower that looked down on this village in the valley below. You can see the olive trees and the plowed fields as well as several tufa towers.

Christian churches with frescoes, some still brilliant, are hidden in these tufa towers. Both shots show mid-day light. I think this is the reason for the lack of depth. What can I say? I was there at mid-day and I had no choice.
