Berber Women Gather Firewood

Morocco: late 90’s

Village woman drive their firewood laden donkeys back to the village after a long day in the desert. The fuel will be used to heat the communal oven. I’ve never seen a fire used for heating a home in the desert despite the very cold winter nights.

The “firewood” isn’t exactly wood. It’s a woody, scrub plant that grows in arid soil. Camels eat it. During the long drought in Morocco, the camels could find very little to eat and many were emaciated, but once the rains began, the vegetation in the desert and the dying date palmeraies revived.
