Abandoned Kasbahs near Tinerhir

Abandoned Kasbahs near Tinerhir

Tinerhir, Morocco 1998

Abandoned kasbahs line the rich oasis of Tinerhir and extend into the desert south of the town as well.  They were like castles in the sense that the large gates could prevent unwanted intrusion.  You might find red, gold or sometimes a deep blue tribal design painted on doors or walls of important rooms. Some Kasbahs housed only Berber tribes, some Arabized Berber tribes and some, a long time ago, housed Jewish Berbers.

I’m really enjoying the pictures but your comments re historical perspective, etc are very worth while also. Still don’t know how you have time to do these but keep it up. J.
