Beehive House

Syria 2010

Only a few of these lovely little houses remain where once they were plentiful. They remind me of the houses called trulli, in southern Italy.  The Italian houses are made of stone but similar design. The Italians are preserving their little houses. If only the Syrians could.

When I lived in Syria … long, long ago …. we called them Aleppo houses. We had a particularly memorable encounter with a family in Dana, not far from the Krak des Chevaliers, when the temperature outside was well over 40 degrees, but inside the beautiful house was lovely and cool.
