An Indian woman extends her mehndi painted hands

Mehndi

Rajasthan, India

This is the type of shot you can get when the sun is beating straight down. This woman was sitting in the shade. That’s where you want your subject to be at mid-day. And that’s where you want to be as well.

Mehndi makes a woman’s hands and feet look as if she is wearing lace gloves and stockings. I like it when the henna is black colored, often it is orange and not so attractive in my opinion. I think the orange color is from not leaving the henna paste on the skin long enough. The woman must sit and wait for hours for the color to turn black and most woman have work to do.

Men in Morocco have their hands hennaed when they marry. The paste is just slathered over the palms, no design is applied. The henna confers good luck.
