Bayon: Being Eaten Alive

Stone Heads of Bayon

Cambodia 2011

Although these monuments are spectacular, it was difficult to figure out a good perspective. Here, I’ve got the two sculptures plus a tree that is nearly the same size…maybe that makes it balance. I do like the fact that the stones don’t seem so gritty. The temples and monuments of Siem Riep are composed of sandstone which, I’ve just read, has a fine grain. But my photos show a gritty, crumbly, unattractive surface. The glory of the structure is diminished by distracting contrast and texture. I was blaming myself, as is my wont, but today I read that the stones are being damaged by microorganisms…being eaten alive as it were.  Those microorganisms have ruined my photographs!
