Barbary Apes Grooming

Morocco 2006

The dense forest of cedar trees hid the bright sunlight. The apes moved like greased lightening. I thought I had to keep my ISO at 400 or below, otherwise I’d get noise. As a result, I got nothing but blur. My tree is in sharp focus but none of my apes were anywhere near sharp. I used Alien Skin’s Exposure 7 to fake sharpness here.

Getting a sharp photo is key. Shutter speed needs to be the same or higher than your lens. For instance, if you are shooting with a 150mm lens, then your shutter speed needs to be 1/150. How to get that in a low light situation: increase your ISO, open your aperture. Hold your breath as you shoot. Brace yourself or your camera against a wall or here I could have leaned against a tree. Well, maybe not. Those apes were bold as well as fast and they were all over the place baring their sharp teeth.
