Abu-Simbal

Abu-Simbel with four statues of Ramses

Abu-Simbel

Egypt 1998

Four statues of Ramses II once faced Nubia on Egypt’s southern border. The temple was dedicated to the god Amon-Re who might be called the Egyptian version of Zeus.

Inside the temple are several halls filled with huge statues and paintings depicting some of Ramses successful battles.

An Egyptian man, or maybe he is Nubian, poses for me in the entry way to the temple. The sun shines directly into the entrance all the way into the temple and lights the sanctuary on two days of the year.

I asked this man to pose because I noticed the ankh and it’s shadow. I hated to ask people to  pose in those days and, to be honest, I still do. It puts so much pressure on both of us unless the person loves to be photographed.
