Abore Village Redux

Abore children in a group portrait in their village

Abore Children

Ethiopia 2013

Abore children gather to watch us photograph their village. I think they were a bit shy, unlike their parents. If you raised your camera, they might turn and run, but here in a group they felt safe. The little girl on the right is charged with the care of her younger sibling. Girls are given many household chores such as cooking, cleaning and making of handicrafts. Girls may marry as young as ten years old but the norm is 14 years old.

The Abore seemed fairly prosperous. I read that they are traders. The women wore fabric skirts which had to be purchased. The women of the Hamar tribe, in contrast, wore leather skirts. To be honest, the leather skirts were prettier but must have taken many hours to make.
