A Time to Plant

Farmer with Plow Horse

Romania 2012

Being a farmergirl, I wanted to photograph the Romanian farmers and their horses. My guide, Daniel Gheorghita, www.covinnus.com, always happily obliged.

I remember that both Daniel and I got out of the car to photograph this handsome, well cared for horse. It was evident that Romanians prize their animals. I don’t think I ever saw a poorly kept horse.

It was spring and time to plant. This man led the horse across the field while another man guided the plow. The Romanians often had one man at the horse’s head and another man sat in the wagon. I don’t know why. This is not the way it was done in South Carolina when I was a girl.

Village in Romania with old woman in traditional dress

Romania: Village Woman

A village woman prepares to spend the day working in her garden. Her work worn hands tell us that she has spent many seasons in the fields.  I loved photographing women like her who wore traditional clothing, who look like someone’s grandma.
