A Moving Feast

Ethiopia chickens tied upside down to the back of a van flying down the highway

Next Stop: Colonel Sanders

Ethiopia 2013

A van draped with live chickens whipped past us. The driver was in a hurry to get the market. Instantly we reached for our cameras and tried to get a shot through the window of our car.

The load of chickens wasn’t squawking as you might imagine. Strung up, their feet tied to the luggage rack,  they seemed to calmly take in the landscape as it flashed by. What were they thinking?

This method of poultry transport is common. People in third world countries want their chicken on the hoof, so to speak. No plastic packages for them.

I think I’m getting too old to hunt. I’ve been feeling sorry for any birds that I happen to shoot. If, in a market, there are just pieces in plastic I seem to be OK for eating them. I saw your chickens and did indeed wonder what they were thinking. Made me a bit sad. J.
