handsome young man sells traditional hats in the hills above Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

The Hat Salesman

Ethiopia 2013

The hills above Addis Ababa are covered with woods. A soft rain dripped on the leaves and on this young man who stood on the verge with his hats. Our photographer teacher/guide spotted him and began to photograph him. He didn’t care about photographs, he wanted to know if we would buy one of his hats. We didn’t, but I’m sure we tipped him. Tips aren’t really good enough. To sell a hat, that’s what he wanted.

Ethiopian women carry huge bundles of wood on their backs

A Good Attitude

This woman stops her work for a moment and  gives us a radiant smile. She is looking at us as keenly as we are looking at her. The weight of her burden doesn’t bother her. She’s strong. Stronger than we… we couldn’t imagine carrying that anywhere much less up a steep mountain road.

      Hi, Leonara.
Glad you found my blog. I met this young man near Addis Ababa. He was selling hats by the side of the road. We saw hats for sale in other areas, but these were unique…at least in our experience. If you want to buy in quantity…for your shop or website, let me know. I can put you in touch with someone who could help you.
Again thanks for visiting my blog.
