Dogon Tribe of Mali

Dogon Tribe

Mali, West Africa 2001

We had hiked high into the Bandiagara Escarpment to visit a small village of Dogon.  When we arrived, it was difficult to tell who had come to see whom. The villagers gathered around us chattering and gaping just as we gaped at them. The Dogon men wore western clothes but the women wore billowy floral cotton prints. The Dogon are slender. And, though I hate to say it, they were astounded at the size of some of us tourists. After we left, they had gossip for a week as our guide in Uzbekistan used to say.
