Transylvania 2012
There were many “highlights” on my trip through Romania, but I must say staying at the Kalnoky estate was one I’ll never forget. (http://www.rosemarysheel.com/archives/kalnoky-estate)
Daniel, my guide, (www.covinnus.com) and I met early to take a photo walk through the village to get as close as we could to the old manor house of Count Kalnoky. By chance we met the caretaker who allowed us into the house. Visions from Tolstoy’s writings filled my mind as we walked through the rooms: some furnished as they were before the communists confiscated the estate.
The house itself was not very grand. Perhaps the family had another residence in a nearby city. Count Kalnoky is in the process of refurbishing the estate and village with the help of Prince Charles of England. One thing that does not need refurbishing is the atmosphere of rural Romania.
The beautiful rolling hills, the dark forests inhabited by bears, horses pulling wagons loaded with hay, scowling gypsy boys (Maybe I should have asked if I could take their picture?) villagers working in their gardens: it was a vision of life as it was…before the overwhelming burden of the 24 hour news cycle.
Simply lovely! J
